St Laurence Upwey Looks both ways.

Looking back, the church holds eight centuries of village history in its stones and archives. It was centre stage for all baptisms, marriages and burials and continues in this role. Regular worshippers keep it in good repair, while others may offer their skills to preserve the peaceful and welcoming ambience.

Looking forward it remains the iconic heart of the community as an important building and always-open public space. Bell ringers, ministers, worshippers, musicians, and concert-goers among others ensure regular footfall. Fresh initiatives look to sharing more church activity with the community, and fund-raising is a perfect opportunity.

• 1201 – Earliest known reference to St Laurence Church

• 1267 – First known priest recorded

• Late 1400s – Much of the present church constructed

• 1838 – South aisle added

• 1891 – Major restoration completed

• 1907 – New chancel, vestry and organ chamber dedicated

• 1955 – Church damaged during the great Upwey flood

• Today – Grade II* listed church serving the Upwey community
