The River Wey Society

The River Wey Society is a volunteer-led conservation and community group dedicated to protecting, preserving, and cherishing the River Wey in Dorset.

The RIVER WEY, with a length of about five and a half miles, is possibly the shortest major river in the country. It originates in Upwey and is one of 161 chalk rivers in England. These rivers follow the band of chalk that sweeps diagonally across southern England and occur nowhere else in the UK. They are very rare in the world as a whole.

The images below show parts of the river in Upwey and illustrates some of the work the society carries out in maintaining the area close to the river such as clearing debris form the roadside next to the river.

A frequent stopping off point for visitors to the river is the green at the bottom of Stottingway Street (DT3) and coaches with students studying the environment often park there allowing students access to the river and time to enjoy lunch there.
