A Building at the Heart of Upwey for Nearly Two Centuries
The Old School Hall is one of Upwey's most treasured historic buildings. Built during the Victorian era in the mid-19th century as the village's Church School, it educated generations of local children for well over a century.
In July 1976, the school closed as pupil numbers declined, with Upwey's children moving to the newly opened St Nicholas & St Laurence School in neighbouring Broadwey. Rather than allowing the building to fall into disuse, the Upwey Society led a successful campaign to preserve it for the village. In 1978, the former school reopened as a community centre, continuing its long tradition of serving local people.
To safeguard its future, a charitable trust was established in 1981, and today the Upwey Old School Village Hall remains a thriving venue for clubs, exhibitions, craft fairs, meetings, classes and community events. More than 175 years after it first opened, the building continues to bring people together and is an important part of Upwey's heritage.
