Walks Around Upwey
& the Jurassic Coast
Upwey is a lovely starting point for exploring the Wey Valley, nearby countryside and South Dorset Ridgeway. If you would rather walk with a group, South Dorset Ramblers publishes its upcoming walks with distances, starting points and walk-leader contact details.
The Upwey and Bincombe circular walk is a scenic 4.25-mile route taking hikers through historic villages, rolling valley tracks, and ancient ridge paths south of Dorchester.
Step-by-Step Directions
Upwey Village to Roman Road: From St Laurence's Church, head south along Church Street past historic cottages. Turn left onto Elwell Street, following signs for the local footpaths. Take the tarmac path up Little Hill, emerging near The Old Ship onto the Roman Road lane.
Ascent to the Ridgeway: Follow the lane steeply uphill as it transforms into a wide bridleway track. The path climbs toward the ridge, opening up expansive views across the Wey Valley toward Portland. Turn right at the upper track junction to walk along the crest.
Descent into Bincombe: Follow the bridleway as it descends toward the old Dorchester Road, then head south under the A354 underpass. Walk along the shallow valley lane passing West Farm into the village of Bincombe.
Bincombe Village & Church: In the heart of the village, take the lane leading to Holy Trinity Church, Bincombe to view the historic site before returning to the main track.
Return Track to Upwey: Follow the signposted footpath leading west across the field boundaries toward Upwey. Cross the footbridge and follow Chapel Lane under the railway line. Pass along Dorchester Road before turning back into Elwell Street to return to Church Street and Upwey Wishing Well Tearooms & Water Gardens.
